Why it exists

Some work cannot be priced before it is understood.

Discovery that will change the plan, a product whose next steps depend on what users do, a modernisation where the estate is learned as you go: this kind of work cannot be fully specified up front, and a fixed price on it only prices in the uncertainty. Time and materials does the opposite. You pay for the time actually spent, the scope can change as you learn, and nothing has to be renegotiated through change requests.

That flexibility does not mean you manage the team. Odeontech directs the day-to-day work and owns the delivery. You keep control of what matters to you: the priorities, the progress and the approvals, with full visibility of the time spent on each piece of work.

When the scope settles, the work can move to a turnkey project or a dedicated team, usually with the same people.

Who does what

Clear roles, flexible scope.

You

Oversee the work

  • Set and change the priorities as you learn
  • Follow the progress and the time spent
  • Approve what is delivered
Odeontech

Direct the work

  • Plan and run the day-to-day work
  • Deliver what was prioritised, to our engineering standard
  • Report the time against the work it was spent on
In practice

How the model works, day to day.

01

Priorities you can change

The next piece of work is planned with you. When what you learn changes what matters, the priorities change with it, without a change request or a new contract.

  • Priorities reviewed with you at a rhythm agreed with you
  • No change requests for a change of direction
02

Time you can see

Time is reported against the work it was spent on, so you can see what each piece cost and decide whether the next one is worth it.

  • Time reported per piece of work
  • Reporting and billing agreed with you before the start
03

Approval stays with you

Work is shown as it is delivered, and you approve it. If something is not what you need, it goes back into the plan.

  • Working software shown, not slides
  • Your approval decides what counts as done
04

Delivery stays with us

You do not need a tech lead of your own to direct the work: Odeontech plans and runs the day-to-day execution and is accountable for the delivery.

  • Our engineers, our delivery system
  • One point of contact for priorities and progress
How it starts

From a first call to the first priorities.

01

First call

We talk through the work: what is known, what is not, and what you want to learn first.

02

Terms

We agree how time is reported and billed, according to your needs.

03

First priorities

Work starts as soon as the first priorities are set.

04

Steer

You follow progress and time, adjust priorities and approve what is delivered, at a rhythm agreed with you.

Fit

When to choose this model.

Right fit

Choose time and materials when the scope is still evolving or exploratory, when priorities may change as you learn, and when you would rather pay for the time actually spent than for an estimate of the unknown.

Look elsewhere

If the scope is defined with acceptance criteria, a turnkey project fixes the price. If you need a stable team on a long roadmap, a dedicated team fits better. If you only need more engineers under your own tech lead, see staff augmentation.

Time is reported against the work it was spent on, and you set the priorities. You always see what has been spent and decide what comes next.
Yes. Once the scope is defined with acceptance criteria, the remaining work can move to a turnkey project at a fixed price, usually with the same people.
